The study and dating of tree rings is called dendrochronology. Dendrochronologists are scientists who study tree rings to answer questions regarding the natural world and the place of humans in the world. There are many practical applications of the study of tree rings. Dendrochronology is considered an interdisciplinary science and its techniques and theory can be applied to various applications.

For more than a decade, Distinguished Professor David Stahle has taken core samples from trees and examined the chronology of their rings to help explain the societal impact of drought and other climate changes. Combined with reliable drought indices and historical descriptions of climate conditions, dendrochronology — the technique of dating events and environmental change by relying on characteristic patterns of tree-ring growth — can provide a climate perspective on important events such as large-scale human migration and even the rise and fall of entire civilizations.

A research team, including University of Arkansas Distinguished Professor and dendrochronologist David Stahle and Ewing Research Professor Edward Cook of Columbia University, used more than 1, climate-sensitive tree-ring chronologies from multiple tree species across North America to reconstruct the Palmer drought severity index PDSI , a widely used soil moisture index.

Stahle presented his research Friday, Feb. He also participated in a panel discussion with other climate experts. The Palmer drought severity index is based on instrumental temperature and precipitation data dating back to Stahle and his colleagues inserted the index between fixed points on a grid covering most of North America. Their tree-ring reconstructions cover the same geographic area but extend back to A. Stahle wanted to examine the reconstructed indices to test the accuracy of the records and to see if there were any patterns related to drought and other climate changes.

The findings were dramatic. The data also confirmed historical descriptions of climate conditions prior to the modern era of instrumentation for weather and climate measurements.

Tree-rings are a promising high-resolution archive for gaseous atmospheric mercury composed primarily of Hg 0 reconstruction, but the influence of cambial age ring number from pith and tree-specific differences are uncertainties with potential implications for interpreting tree-ring Hg signals. We address these uncertainties and reconstruct the last years of Hg 0 change using a tree-ring Hg data set from 20 white spruce Picea glauca trees from a pristine site in central Yukon.

Cambial age has no significant influence on tree-ring Hg concentration, but tree-specific differences in mean concentration are prevalent and must be normalized to a common mean to accurately constrain long-term trends in the mean tree-ring Hg record. This general pattern is reflected in other proxy-based Hg reconstructions worldwide. This study provides a novel long-term Hg 0 reconstruction in the Western subarctic from one of the most widely distributed boreal tree species in North America and, therefore this proxy may also hold potential for investigating broader spatial patterns in Hg 0 cycling across the subarctic and northern boreal forest.

Students from across Canada are invited to be a part of the Trans-Canadian Research and Environmental Education TREE project: a national research program to study the environmental history of their own community. The MAD Lab studying tree growth and the CLS studying chemistry are able to look at tree cores, specifically the chemistry of the rings, and connect that information to a timeline of environmental events of the community.

Students will learn about the life and nutrient cycles of trees, apply that knowledge to decipher information about the environment captured in tree rings, and the nutrients in soil by working through modules and activities designed to engage students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics STEM , and social studies with Indigenous perspectives.
