Reading pot codes

There are two sets of numbers on the pot. As seen here, the first set that says K refers to the resistance value of the pot. You will also find pots marked K, in fact they are more common. The second set of numbers tells us the date that the pot was made. It does this by week number and year. The last digit is the year and the preceding 1 or 2 digits represent the week during the year. The pot shown on the right was made in week 22 in the year This appears to apply to years from to maybe after which time the design of the pot was changed and the dating code lost.

Ever since Fender started making basses in , they dated certain parts and components to give a general idea of when the instrument was produced. Then there are pickup and potentiometer date codes, serial numbers, and even bridge stamps and pickguard codes in some cases. So how do you properly determine the year of production? They just grabbed whatever part or component was ready and put the instrument together to fill an order as fast as possible. The general rule of thumb is that a bass is as old as its newest part, or at least its latest dated part.

So, if you have a Fender with a neck date of and the pots are dated , then you have a Fender Bass. There are some years in particular that can get really tricky. Some Precision Basses have no neck date stamp at all, and several Fender basses from to have neck stamp codes that are difficult to decipher and sometimes impossible to read. Body stamp dates were used by Fender from the early s to the mids, after which they stopped until the s where they started again sporadically to this day.

Potentiometer codes are pretty reliable for dating, usually indicating the year and week it was made. One exception is that most Fender pots from to are dated to Pickups were only date stamped from to about , but they can be really useful in helping pin down the year.

I’ve heard that to properly date your vintage guitar, aside from serial number, is to remove the black plate and check the pot potentiometer codes which are generally digits. Now that being said, who’s to say those posts are originals? Couldn’t they be replaced or changed along the way? I guess new solder would be a clue. So is the idea that all 4 pots should have the same date, preferably the date your guitar was manufactured according to the serial number?

And finally, what exactly do these numerical codes represent?

EIA Source-Date Codes: Electronic components such as transformers, potentiometers, speakers, and some capacitors are often stampted with a date code.

Gather together all the date codes from those components and this tool will tell you that the unit was made some time after the latest date not including any replacements of course. For pots this code is 6 or 7 digits. The codes may contain spaces or dashes, if so please include them. Pots made by IRC use their own format which is also supported, this will start with and will have 2 spaces in it, you must include those spaces so that the this tookl knows its an IRC code.

It should be noted that large manufacturers often stocked up on components in large batches so the unit may be made a year or more after some of its components. In Fender bought a huge stock of pots which were used right up until so it is possible for a Fender guitar to contain pots. I have also included some Gibson guitar specific part codes in my database which will be automatically detected and decoded. This tool should now work for all speaker manufacturers, they can have codes of between 5 and 8 digits possibly containing spaces or dashes.

Year of introduction varies between , depending on source of information. A qualified guess would be that those “de luxe” models turned up around , in connection with the Hofner introduction in the UK.

The Hofner factory did not put serial numbers on their instruments until the early seventies. Some instruments however had the date of manufacture penciled, or stamped, on the underside of the top. The only way of finding this identification is by inserting a dental mirror and some illumination through the treble f-hole. Dating by “Pot Code”. Another way of finding out the approximate year of manufacture, is by looking at the potentiometers. Loosen the two screws holding the controlplate, turn it upside down and you will find some numbers.

From and onwards Hofner potentiometers where stamped with two or three digits, for example , where the first digits stands for week and the last digit indicates year of manufacture. In this case week 30, Note however that this not necessarily means a guitar made in , only that the potentiometer was made that year.

It is important to remember that no one feature is the absolute determinant factor in dating, but rather the totality of all features taken into consideration. It is not normal for any other vintage SG to have remarkably low frets. If this is the case, the guitar needs a re-fret. Beware sellers passing off worn out frets as a “Fretless Wonder”.
